Network Coding for Improving the Fairness of Long-Hop TCP Flows in a Multi-Hop Wireless Network

چکیده
Long-hop TCP flows undergo throughput degradation when contending with short-hop TCP flows in a multi-hop wireless network due to collision related losses. Long hop flows compared to the short hop flows have to contend for the medium more number of times and hence suffer more number of collisions. In this paper, we propose a network coding scheme based on the timed network coding to improve the fairness of long-hop TCP flows in a multi-hop wireless network. The network coding reduces the number of transmission in wireless which leads in less contension and less collisions. As per our knowledge, this is the first attempt to apply network coding for alleviating TCP unfairness problem. We corroborate our proposed scheme with simulations in NS-2. Simulation results show that the proposed network coding scheme provides improvement in fairness of longhop TCP flows.

A multi-hop PSO based localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks
A sensor network consists of a large number of sensor nodes that are distributed in a large geographic environment to collect data. Localization is one of the key issues in wireless sensor network researches because it is important to determine the location of an event. On the other side, finding the location of a wireless sensor node by the Global Positioning System (GPS) is not appropriate du...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملOrigins and Solutions of Proportional Unfairness in IEEE 802.11 Multi-hop Wireless Networks
Proportional unfairness exists in multi-hop wireless networks where IEEE 802.11 is employed as the medium access control protocol. This thesis investigates the origins of unfairness and proposes solutions to improve fairness in such networks. This thesis first studies multi-hop topologies consisting of two disjoint flows and four nodes. All possible topologies depending on whether the different...

Wireless multi-hop networks have been envisioned to have many potential applications, e.g., a small stand-alone network for a group of mobile users (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks), a costefficient stub-network to connect to the Internet (Wireless Mesh Networks), or a self-organized community network connecting houses together (Wireless Community Networks). However the preliminary deployment experience...
متن کاملWXCP: Explicit Congestion Control for Wireless Multi-hop Networks
TCP experiences serious performance degradation in wireless multi-hop networks with its probe-based, loss-driven congestion control scheme. We describe the Wireless eXplicit Congestion control Protocol (WXCP), a new explicit flow control protocol for wireless multi-hop networks based on XCP. We highlight the approaches taken by WXCP to address the difficulties faced by the current TCP implement...
